The Home of the Future According to Philips

"Face it. It's not really practical
to have all these remote controls lying around. Especially when
the one you're looking for is hiding down the back of the couch or
under the cushions."

March 2003 (Newstream) -- In its Connected Home concept, based
on the increasing availability of broadband and recent developments in
wireless connectivity of consumer electronics devices, Philips is
developing a range of solutions to facilitate content entering the
home and being distributed around it, creating a Connected Home
entertainment experience for a broad scope of consumer needs.
Philips revolutionizes control of home cinema and home automation
products with iPronto: the dashboard for the digital home
Who hasn't frantically been searching for the remote when your
favorite show is about to start? - And when you finally do track it
down, it's always the wrong one.
In this age of emerging wireless communications, the number of remote
controls is growing rapidly... An average person will have at least
four remotes. One for operating the TV, a second to program the VCR,
and a third to control the audio set. The recently bought DVD player
or home entertainment system might bring the total of remotes to four.
And if you live in an area without cable - or your cable provider
doesn't offer your selection of channels - you could easily add one to
manage your satellite receiver.
Face it. It's not really practical to have all these remote controls
lying around. Especially when the one you're looking for is hiding
down the back of the couch or under the cushions.
Device control, media control, home control...
The iPronto - the latest member of the Philips Pronto family of
universal remote controls - provides a single device to control all
video, audio and home appliances at the single touch of a button. It
learns any infrared code from another remote by simply pointing it to
the iPronto and pressing a button - or by selecting it from over five
hundred brands in its on-board database.
But that's far from all: Using display and connectivity technology to
get TV listings from the Internet, the iPronto Electronic Program
Guide displays it on its LCD touch screen. So no more wasting your
time by surfing through TV channels to find the programs you want to
watch or record. One touch to select the show you want will
automatically change the channel on your TV.
Manage your digital home and lifestyle through an all integrated,
always on, convenient and intuitively simple interface. From any part
of your house, with one touch, access your entertainment devices or
find out what TV program you want to watch or go to a website to
instantly access the information you are looking for.
In a fully finger-operated user interface you can use multiple
applications at the same time. For instance, while controlling your TV
and watching a sport broadcast, you'd be checking the scores on the
Internet; all on the same screen! The iPronto is the ultimate
controller to your home - anywhere in your home. You pick it up to
turn up the lights, turn of the music or water your lawn. You quickly
reference your stocks, the weather, or the latest headlines from the
kitchen. Or just sit in your room and order a pizza.
The iPronto is the ideal mixture between convenience, ease of use and
innovation. Whatever you do, you are in control - because Philips
knows you want to be.

New Philips Wireless Digital Multimedia Receiver brings PC-based
audio, video and streaming Internet content into the living room
Now consumers can enjoy all their PC-based audio and video content, as
well as a tremendous choice of streaming Internet media, in the
comfort of their living room with the new Wireless Digital Multimedia
Receiver from Philips. For the first time this new receiver offers an
easy-to-install and easy-to-operate solution to bring the increasingly
popular world of PC-based multimedia to the normal audio systems and
TV sets in consumers' living rooms or anywhere else in the home.
This means users can now enjoy all this PC-based multimedia content
together with family and friends in the convenience and comfort of
their normal home setting, without all the restrictions in terms of
location, as well as viewing and listening freedom, that use of the PC
brings with it.
The new Wireless Digital Multimedia Receiver brings content from the
PC into the living room using a standard IEEE 802.11b ('WiFi')
wireless link, so no complex wiring is needed for installation. With a
simple, intuitive user interface on the receiver's LCD display and the
remote control unit, consumers can easily navigate through the audio
and video content stored on their PC and select whatever they want to
view or hear. The controls are simple-to-use, for example with
familiar functions like Play, Stop, Previous and Next. The automatic
content-search feature makes it even easier to find playable content
on the PC without the need for time-consuming looking for it.
The Wireless Digital Multimedia Receiver allows most of today's
favorite PC-based multimedia formats to be played, including for
example MP3 audio, digital still pictures in JPEG format, and MPEG-1
or DIVx movies.
Direct Internet connection allows PC-free use
It is even possible to use the Wireless Digital Multimedia Receiver
without a PC by direct connection to the Internet, simply by using a
Wireless Access Point, which forms the basis for a home network. In
this case consumers with a broadband Internet connection can choose
from literally thousands of freely available Internet radio channels.
Here again selection is very simple, for example by music styles,
artists or eras, allowing consumers to create personalized stations
playing their own favorite music. Also available are numerous stations
with news, sports and special interests in any language and from
virtually all regions of the world.
Convenient installation is a major feature of the Wireless Digital
Multimedia Receiver. Thanks to Universal Plug & Play ('UPnP'), there
are no complex set-up procedures nor complex user interfaces. The use
of the industry-standard IEEE 802.11b wireless technology ensures full
and transparent interoperability and simple connectivity with all
users' existing network equipment such as routers and Wireless Access
Points. To make installation even easier and eliminating the need to
open the PC, Philips will offer a preconfigured USB-to-wireless
adapter when the Wireless Digital Multimedia Receiver is introduced,
which is expected to be in the second half of 2003.
Normal PC use is always possible
Normal use of the PC is always possible even while the Wireless
Digital Multimedia Receiver is being used, thanks to its independent
multitasking capability. The receiver is always connected, which means
consumers have instant access to their PC-based media at any time
without the need for any start-up or connection procedures.
The Wireless Digital Multimedia Receiver is a stylish unit (435 mm
width and 61 mm height) and designed to seamlessly match most other
audio and video components. The wireless antenna is integrated inside
the unit for a simple and visually unobtrusive installation. For easy
connection to all consumers' audio and video equipment the receiver
has SCART A/V, stereo audio and digital audio outputs. The typical
transmission range of a Wireless Access Point is 30 to 45 metres. The
wireless streams between the Wireless Access Point and the receiver is
subject to the normal IEEE 802.11b security features, which restricts
reception to authorized users only.
With this new Wireless Digital Multimedia Receiver Philips is taking a
further step towards putting into practice its 'connected home' and
'digital convergence' strategies. These aim to bridge the
traditionally separate PC and home entertainment worlds, giving
consumers convenient and transparent enjoyment of all their favourite
digital content from anywhere in the home, regardless of the device on
which it is stored.
Philips DesXcapeTM 150DM detachable monitor gives users access to PC
data and applications anywhere in the home
Why would anyone want to shackle themselves to their computers?
Wouldn't it be great if your computer monitor were light enough to
carry the information it displayed across the room, rather than you
having to write down, try and memorize or print out the information
you need? Wouldn't it be great to be able to take your information to
people, rather than have to wait for them to come to you?
The time of having to sit behind a computer screen to access the
information you need, is over. The DesXcape [pronounced Desk Escape]
from Philips allows you to access the data stored in your computer, or
surf the Internet with all the convenience of a hands free telephone.
The ubiquitous state of technology today means you don't have to be
sat behind your desk in order to be able to pick up emails, surf the
web, or chat to friends. DesXcape is a multifunctional 'smart display'
based on Windows technology. It enables you to access PC applications
and data via a wireless network from anywhere in your home. It even
comes in it's own cradle, so when docked, the DesXcape transforms from
a cutting edge detachable monitor, to a top-of-the-range LCD computer
screen.
The possibility of carrying your monitor around with you for any
period of time is also not just wishful thinking, weighing in at only
5.5 lbs [2.5 kg], the DesXcape makes it possible to move it around
your office or home with the greatest of ease.
So what's it got? Well, we have packed it with an Active Matrix
15-inch color LCD touch screen, 802.11b wireless technology and
Intel's Intel XScale technology, which has been specifically designed
for low power consumption. All in all everything has been done to
ensure that the rechargeable batteries deliver up to five hours of
continuous operation to your fingertips.
The DesXcape also features a built-in virtual keyboard, touch pad and
sophisticated handwriting recognition, similar in usage to the
state-of-the-art PDA's currently on the market. For more intensive
typing requirements, the DesXcape also comes with a wireless keyboard,
ensuring that you really have the maximum freedom of movement to
create, research, or play via online media.
