"Buyer beware! The Compaq iPAQ is
not all that it appears!"
|
You've probably read about Compaq's
announcement that the iPAQ Pocket PC is upgradeable to the next
version of the Windows CE operating system. In fact, you would have to
be blind to have missed it. Microsoft and Compaq have been touting the
iPAQ as the only Pocket PC that can be upgraded because of it's
special flash ROM that is inside the device.
However, according to an anonymous source, there's something very important that Compaq isn't
telling you. While the device is upgradeable, there isn't enough
memory to support an upgrade of all the applications!
Reportedly, users that decide to
upgrade their iPAQs will lose the following applications when they
install the update:
- Media Player
- Transcriber
- MS Reader
- AvantGo
In addition, the upgraded iPAQs will
not include five new features that are going to be built-in to the
latest version of the OS. Although my source would not reveal the
exact applications or new functionality that will be missing, they did
say "these are significant features that users will be interested in
and want to upgrade to."
Apparently, Microsoft is going to try
and differentiate the stripped down version from the fully functional
devices. New devices will include all of the applications and functionality, while
upgraded devices will be handicapped by not including all of the
features listed above.
Buyer beware! The Compaq iPAQ is not
all that it appears!
